Deep Zoom

Headlight introduces a compelling interactive user experience offering a consistent, crisp and dynamic exposure to advertising content.

Surface

Surface is a horizontal display on a table-like form factor that morphs from an ordinary table-top into a new, vibrant way to bring connected entertainment and digital content to users.

The cool factor is the way you interact with digital content by using your hands to get what you need.

Surface provides effortless interaction with digital content through natural gestures, touch and physical objects. Because Surface is essentially housed in a table, it's easy for individuals or multiple people to gather around it in a way that feels familiar - making collaboration more powerful and fun.

LDC Innovation Labs team developed various applications especially for surface technology.

OneAlbum-Automatically getting photos that interest you from your friends’ albums

Based on unsupervised face recognition and event matching technology

Today, my album refers to a collection of photos I have taken. But many photos relevant to me—such as photos of me or my children—are in my friends' albums. OneAlbum automatically finds relevant photos in my friends' albums on social networks (e.g., Facebook) or in shared albums, brings them to my album, and shows them side-by-side with the photos I've taken. For example, if I was at a party, I'll see all photos from that party—those I've taken and those my friends took. The technology behind OneAlbum is a novel unsupervised face-recognition algorithm developed in ILabs and is based in part on algorithms from Microsoft Research Asia. It analyzes the photos in my album to find automatically the faces of people I most care about, based on frequency of their appearance; no tagging is required. Then, using the social-network graph and other information, OneAlbum crawls my friend's albums looking for photos of people and events that interest me. The algorithm was tested on real large-scale albums including tens of thousands of photos and achieved accuracy rates as high as 90 percent.

The Labs group focuses on developing groundbreaking, paradigm-shifting technologies and business-models, which are unlimited by subject, scope or focus. It fosters the creation of new, highly disruptive products and technologies by allowing its talented team members to dream up wild ideas, while providing them with the ideal environment and enabling a long-term development span of 5-10 years.

Comprised of small teams of 4-5 experts and researchers, the Labs group encourages a dynamic, highly speculative, and experiential research and development process. We collaborate with other labs across Microsoft, occasionally teaming up on specific projects. Our teams engage, for instance, in the development of technologies or products that re-invent information display or change the future of search and advertising mechanisms.

The group funnels ideas from within the center, across MS, and the world at large. It exposes its activities and incubates many of them publicly to test their viability in a viral way. The propositions, which bear the most merit, are launched as new incubations within the Labs, and their inventors receive the support needed to see their ideas through to fruition.Ultimately, our goal is to bring several projects to the point of "irrefutability", whereby a product group acknowledges a project's value and "acquires it" for full-fledged incubation.

Digital Lens

Vision problems affect most of the population during their lives. Digital Lens was designed with the mission to simplify the process of detecting UI which is less accessible to users with impaired vision.
